Paul Gauthier is a priest who teaches theology in a Dijon great semi nary. In 1957, he leaves for the Holy Land to lead the life of a poor man among the poorest. He settles in Nazareth and becomes a worker priest, a labourer on several construction sites. Little by little, he becomes aware of the Palestinian drama and discovers how miserable they are, especially because of their housing condition. He thus initiates a project of workers' housing development to grant the poor a decent place to live. This initiative is then extended to Bethlehem and Beit-Sahour. In 1958, Myriam joins him to help him and soon she becomes his trustful sidekick to support him during ups and downs of his endeavour. The Six Days War starts in 1967. Revolted by all the horrors he witnesses, he decides to leave Israel and wants to start all over again to provide human warmth where he can be helpful.
