Three years after his tender wife Shahindokht died in a car accident, Homayoun Sanati tells us how he, a well-read and refined man, a translator and one of the pioneers in modern publishing in Iran, had decided to venture in a totally different milieu: the rose culture. His wife and he started to grow roses and set up a small workshop to extract rose essential oil in the Kerman region where poppies are traditionally cultivated. They had to be most obstinate to overcome all the obstacles in their way. To start with, they had to persuade the peasants who were convinced that opium was far more profitable than roses.
