Newly arrived from China, Ah Na makes her way to Buddha's Happiness, a Chinese restaurant in New York where a friend from the same region she comes from now works. From her conversations with another employees, she learns about the hard lot of immigrants who have worked in the restaurant kitchen. But Ah Na in not one to be discouraged; she's determined to get her share of the American Dream and start a new life. Amidst rumours that she had AIDS, had fled her village, unable to cope with the harassment, attacks and death threats. Strolling around Grand central Station one day, she discovers a place where immigrants women meet to exchange news of home and meet American men. Then she meets Jack, the image of the ideal American, who naturally has a good job, a big car and a house in the suburbs. The picture seems perfect and the dream within reach. But Ah Na's mother arrives…
