In Afghanistan, under the ancient giant statues of the Bamiyan Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban, thousands of families try to survive in the caves. Six-year-old girl Baktay hears her little neighbour reciting the alphabet all day long. She then takes it into her head to go to school, even if it means braving all dangers. On her way, she comes up against the violence of young boys playing at soldiers.
Under the guise of a great simplicity of narrative, Hana Makhmalbaf denounces the ravages of war in Afghanistan and questions the future of children riddled with violence from their youngest age.
