Reserved for the elite of Japanese society, the self-contained red light area of Yoshiwara is the place for pleasures and enjoyment in Edo, the ancient Tokyo. This is where the Oiran, the most important courtesans of that time, are living. They set the new trends of that time, and arouse the envy as much as the hate of people. In their world, beauty often goes along with cruelty… Among them, Kiyosha who was sold as a child is about to become a real legend, under the name of Higurashi…
“Sakuran” is Moyoco Anno's eponymous cult manga adaptation by photographer Mika Ninagawa. The famous I-pop singer Anna Tsuchiya plays the role of young rebel Kiyoha who will become famous.
Sakuran is a visual film, a fresco where the Oirans are the shimmering elements. The brightness of costumes, the refinement of sets, and the unexpectedness of the music, turn this simple story of a poor girl becoming a courtesan into a magnificent show.
