In a kind of limbo between heaven and hell, a ‘professional’ team aims to help people who recently died at any age to select one single moment from their memory within a week. Once selected, this moment will be filmed by the limbo team and will become the eternal personal paradise for the deceased. It is not easy to choose a single moment of happiness. Some people have known few of them, others many. Emotions and laughters come out of this improbable encounter between those needing to choose and those backing them for this often painful choice.
After Life is based on the memories of hundreds old Japanese people. Their story reflects their happiness and fears; it is intimately linked to the history of postwar Japan.
“Though the characters are the dead, this is not a film about death but about the pleasure and pain to put an end to past.” Kore-eda-Hirokazu
