In Yokoama on a bright summer afternoon, a family is gathered to commemorate the tragic death of the elder son who died fifteen years before while trying to save a child from drowning. Nothing changed or rather nothing seems to have changed in the beautiful family house, which earlier was the father’s medical practice. The mother, who prepared the meal with love, welcomes them as warmly as before. Yet, during these years each of them imperceptibly changed.
With altogether humour, tenderness and melancholia, Kore-eda draws the portrait of a family like any other family, linked by love but also by secrets and resentment.
“If my starting point was quite personal (my own mother’s death), I wanted above all to deal with the human bonds which makes a family…something like ‘family is the source of troubles, but it is irreplaceable’. “Kore-eda Hirokazu
