During summer at a moment of intimacy, Yoshiko gets a phone call informing him his grand-father expired. The traditional funeral rites start. For the members of what is no more a family, who did not see each other for a long time, this is the occasion to meet again and... quarrel. Two brothers totally opposite drink and fight. The young sister who disappeared comes back. She has a successful life and seems to be vey sorrowful. The four grand-children live in their own respective world. One of the step-daughters is absent, the other one is too present. We are particularly moved by the grand-mother suffering from senile dementia. Nobody mourns for the deceased.
Using comedy to depict this story of life revolving around death, the film touches all of us, as it inevitably evokes our own personal situation.
Yoshiko, who is sincerely affected, thinks about the meaning of life and death; after the funerals are over, he feels the urge to go to India on the banks of the Ganges.
