Saltanat, a beautiful young woman, and her attentive escort, Kuandyk, have been friends since childhood. Up to their eyes in debt, Saltanat’s family send her to the city where she is promised in marriage to a rich man. Accompanied by Kuandyk, who watches over her, Saltanat leaves her village for the unknown. The two young people find themselves drawn against their will into a train of cruel events and try to resist in all possible ways.
“In all my films, I try to talk about contemporary society. In Kazakhstan today, we are going back to a feudal system. As we have not experienced anything other than the feudal system and socialism, when socialism collapses, feudal reflexes return in no time at all… I think that it is one of these stories of eternal love which exists in every country. Here, it’s the medieval epic Qozy Korpesh-Baian Sulu. Elsewhere, it’s Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette. All these heroes and heroines lived in their times and had their specific problems related to their society, but in each case love finally prevailed.” Adilkhan Yerzhanov
