1862, a whorehouse set towards the end of Edo period. Saheiji, a penniless artist is tricked by the owner and is forced to stay to repay his debt. Stuck between prostitutes, merchants, samurais, notables and political agitators, the witty free actor becomes an observer of the last few years of the shogun's rule.
Famous for having been co-written by Imamura Shohei, who did his very own version 30 years later under the name Eijanaika, Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate was also voted the fifth best national feature ever by Japanese critics.
