Called by his elders to train as a Buddhist monk, 10 years old Little Lama spends most of his life in the isolated Guwa monastery. Going back home for the New Year’s celebrations, the child discovers, puzzled, a brand-new family television. Fascinated by the new technology and the popular Chinese television series “Journey to the West”, he wants to bring the TV back to the monastery to show it to his master. Meanwhile, the villagers are rehearsing their annual staging of a traditional Tibetan opera for the New Year.
“I long to tell the true stories - in my own way - that have come up in my home village, to disclose the real looks of her, and to reveal the genuine conditions of life of the people there…a reciprocal infiltration between tradition and modernism.” Pema Tseden
