Drolma learns that she has a life-threatening illness. She puts it down to her failure to make a pilgrimage that she promised her first husband as he laid dying. Hiding her diagnosis from her current husband Dorje, she decides to leave for Lhassa by feet. Right from the beginning, Drolma’s journey seems doomed. The weather is bad, her health condition makes her suffer and her two accompanying girl porters run off. Dorje decides to join and follow her by car. He brings along Norbu, Dolma’s 10-year-old son from first marriage, who grew up at his grand-parents’ place. Suddenly, the journey takes an unexpected direction...
“‘Ala Changso’ is the transliteration of a Tibetan folk song’s title meaning “Please drink up this cup of good wine !”. It tells the story of a woman who decides to go on a pilgrimage to Lhassa and whose inner secrets are revealed one by one. The photographic style avoids the stereotype of showing natural scenery in most Tibetan films. The camera is always fixed on actors and actresses.” Sonthar Gyal
