In the waters of a lake marking the boundary between North and South Korea, the propeller of a boat belonging to a poor, north Korean fisherman gets caught up in a net. He has no other choice but to let himself float towards the waters of South Korea, where the border police arrest him for spying. He will have to struggle to return to his family...
“Unintentionally, people are prisoners of the political ideology of the place they were born in. Through the character of the fisherman who endures great hardship by going to South Korea and then returning to North Korea, we can see how we are sacrificed by separating the Korean peninsula into two. We also see how this division generates great sorrow... I wanted to show up to what point the State, itself made up of groups of individuals and families, sacrificed the individual in the interests of the State. I consider that in the relationship between North and South Korea, the State subjects the individual to violence, whereas, on the contrary, it ought to guarantee freedom and peace.” Kim Ki-duk
