An old oil tanker abandoned off the Iranian coastline. Under Captain Nemat’s authority, a small community of families from southern Iran has set up home on the decks, in the hold, in the cabins and has recons- tructed a village. On board, they cultivate vegetables, raise goats, the women bake bread, the men earn a living by selling scrap iron from the tanker’s bowels. The children try to escape family pressure by organizing secret movie nights. The boys hand innocent notes to the young girls. But even if the fathers keep watch, the tanker slowly sinks.
“I think that the observation of a community whose headman has a hold over them is a universal subject. In it, there are the themes of submission, betrayal, great expectations and disappointments... Portraying the movement of the whole was the most important aspect for me; not the fate of each individual but that of the whole community.” Mohammad Rasoulof
