Imamura Shōhei was born in 1926 in Tokyo. Associated with the Japanese New Wave, he was discovered in France in 1963 with The Insect Woman. Baroque and provocative, his work denotes radical social criticism. She often espouses the point of view of those on the margins or at the bottom of society and offers an aesthetic and philosophical quest in the exploration of atrocity, of historical horror. He died in 2006.
