As he promised his wife, Zhigen decides to go back to his native village and free his bird, sole companion of his old age. He planned to make this trip alone but his grand-daughter Renzing, a city spoiled young girl, is left in his care and compelled to leave with him. During their journey through splendid landscapes on the borders of traditional China, despite being worlds apart the two of them start opening to each other and share their memories and adventures. The young girl discovers new merits and particularly those of the heart.
“It is a journey towards roots: the grand-father returns to his past while the young girl discovers where she comes from. This journey therefore holds an introspection which indeed is of an initiatory nature: the young girl will find her most profound identity, and this will change her forever. For me, the peculiarity of an initiatory journey is to bring someone to the core of his innermost self”. Philippe Muyl
