In Iranian Kurdistan mountain areas, a couple is driving a four-byfour. The car’s boot is full of plastic bags filled with bank notes. The man and the woman heap reproaches on each other, in front of a dumbfounded poor fellow. This couple is entrusted with a mission- we don’t know by whom- to give his huge amount of money to the poor people they’ll meet during their journey. Most of the time people refuse, out of suspicion or pride. Leila or Kaveh (played by director Mani Haghighi) sometimes force them to accept, which could pass for a sadist attitude. Is this a charitable work? A game about pride and temptation? Or a psychotic bet? A crazy comedy or a deep insight on the situation in
Iran and more generally in the world, Modest Reception is an action-packed road movie, a parable of money; money which spoils everything. It is not always so easy to be generous.
