On 11th March 2011, on the day of the earthquake, Fujio Murai was hospitalized and operated for a lung cancer. Though he knew he would have only three months to live if he did not undertake a new operation, against the doctor’s advice he decides to go back to his Tokyo family house, along with his son Yoshido. It is the day of his wife death anniversary. The next day, he locks himself in his bedroom, firmly determined not to eat nor drink. Despite his son’s supplication, he does not give up. As days pass memories come back with moments of joy and grief. What drives Fujio to such an extreme decision, and why does he chose to die in such a way?

Kobayashi brings together two events which left their mark on the recent history of Japan: the 2010 illegal pension-claim incidents and the 2011 earthquake with its consequences.
