In the rhythm of a slow visual journey The Land Beneath the Fog takes an intimate look at family relations in Genikan - a remote mountain village on the Merbabu slope (Central Java). A quiet community is facing change without understanding why it happens. As a community of farmers who relies on the traditional Javanese calendar system to read the seasons, they become puzzled by the dramatic change seasons. Describing a life on the brink of vanishing, this documentary offers deep insights into ’an invisible and disenfranchised society’ which is struggling hard to maintain its existence.
"My intention is to build meaningful narratives from simple scenes. Each scene traces the complexity of “feelings” or “moods”, more than focusing on facts and information. One scene defines the other, through indirect, yet strong links and associations, just like a puzzle. The main idea is to present each scene as a complete miniature picture of the whole film and at the same time to maintain it’s secret particularity, so that the audience would individually place each piece of the puzzle where it belongs as the story evolves".
