Hong-Kong has been retroceded to China and has a special statute. Ah Fang lives in a small village in South of China. Her visa for Hong Kong has expired. All day long, she works as a dish-washer in a tiny restaurant from Mong Kol area, and manages to support her family. Though living in one of the most prosperous cities in the world, she can only see the big buildings reflected in the dirty water of her bowl. She also prostitutes herself in Mong Kol. One day, Yin’s companion is attacked under Ah Fang’s eyes. He is hurt by an unusual weapon; a durian, this tropical thorny fruit. Three months later, Yin goes to Northern China, leaving all her memories behind her in Hong Kong. There, she has a dull and monotonous life, but one day for New Year, she gets a parcel. When she opens it she discovers Ah Fang’s gift: a durian. This strange delicious yet stinking fruit reminds her of Hong Kong. Like a durian in the snow, her memories will stay in her heart forever.
