Summer 1989. Having quarrelled with his gi rlfriend, Lei Haiya ng, a shy young mechanic , finds himself alone on Highway 103, heading for Beijing. picked up by some truckers, he is soonjoined by a young girl out to try her luck in the capital. While Lei is dozing, the two men brutally rape the young girl. The next morning, Lei watches help lessly as the girl is raped again. Tao frightened to intervene, he jlees. In Beijing he learns that a body has been found by the side of Highway 103, and decides to go ta the police. Yet, afew days later, he thinks he recognizes the young girl in the subway. Ridded with guilt, and wanting ta explain his spineless, cowardly act, his sole obsession is to find her to ask her to forgive him. Inspired by a news paper article, A Lingering Face traces a young man's quest for identity and manhood The film describes a modern urban China which is opening to the West and has lost his soul and bearings.
