AIn Cambodia under the Red Khmers, the S21 was the main « security office ». In this detention centre located in the heart of Phnom Penh, about 17 000 prisoners were tortured, interrogated and executed bet ween 1975 and 1979. Only three of them are still alive. The film tries to understand how the communist party of democratic Kampuchea ( Angkar, the Organization) has planned and carried its policy of systematic elimination.
During three years, director Rithy Panh and his team conducted a long investigation with the rare survivors, but also with their former executioners. In order to confront their stories, the director convinced them to come back on the very spot of former S21 which has now become a museum of the genocide.
