This is the last screening before the cinema hall closes forever. A young man from Japanese origins enters the hall to protect himself from the rain. The disabled usherette and the projectionist never had an occasion to meet, though they both work in the same cinema. This night being their last chance, the young woman feels like sharing her ‘fortune cake’ with the handsome projectionist. Yet, as she enters the projection room, he is not there. She refuses to leave the place before seeing him. She then sets off to search for him in the maze of the cinema. On the giant screen, Dragon Inn, a Chinese swashbuckling hit of the 60ies, is shown. The Japanese man notices two people in the theatre looking like the actors of the film. They are the only audience watching the film and remembering…
“Is Goodbye Dragon Inn a film about memories? I do not know… Nobody has the power to make past come back. Nobody can avoid the destruction of a cinema hall. The world moves very fast.” Tsai Mingliang.
