Taiwan, 1965. A Yuan and A Yun are childhood friends. They live in a mining village in the mountains. A Yuan decides to leave for Taipei and work while carrying his studies with evening classes. A Yun joins him and finds a job as a dressmaker. A Yuan gets a new job as a motorbike delivery boy. Their daily life is brightened with small pleasures, but both of them miss their home. One day, A Yuan is called to do his national service. He spends his last evening with his family and dares confess to his father that he never took the university entrance exam. His life with the army is monotonous, he often writes to A Yun. She suddenly stops to reply to him.
