Kim Soo-yong was born in 1929 in Ansong. He studied education at Seoul National University. During and after the Korean War, he directed a series of documentaries and short movies for the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, before teaching at Jeongju University. After his 1958 debut with A Henpecked Husband, he directed more than 100 movies through 1999.
