Higashi Yoichi was born in 1934 in Wakayama. He falls in love with cinema at a very early age thanks to his father and develops a fascination for French Cinema later on thanks to a teacher. He becomes a teacher at Waseda University in 1954, but he keeps his passion for cinema. He joins Iwanami production company in 1962 and directs his first short movie in 1965. His debut feature is The Gentle Japanese in 1971.
