Otar Iosseliani was born in 1934. After attending School of music and later faculty of mathematics and mechanics, he eventualy entered the State Film Institute (VGIK). His medium-length film April is denied theatrical distribution and censored until 1974. His debut feature, Falling Leaves is censored until 1974. His Once Upon a Time there was a singing blackbird shot in 1970 has been selected at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight in 1974. Pastorale won the Critics' Prize at Berlin Film Festival in 1982. That year, Otar Iosseliani decided to go into exile in France and started his internationally recognized film career.
